Heating and electricity
  • Since 1997, Hotel Hochschober has sourced its heating energy from the woodchip biomass heating plant on the Turracher Höhe.
  • In 2022, Hotel Hochschober renewed its heating and air purification systems. The centrally controlled system ensures individually regulated comfort temperatures and fresh air throughout the hotel. According to Siemens, our implementation partner, these modernisation measures have resulted in annual savings of around 164 tonnes of CO₂ since the upgrade.
  • Energy monitoring, together with a photovoltaic system and the thermal refurbishment of windows and doors, has helped reduce electricity and heating consumption despite the increase in floor space, for example through the addition of the Waldvilla. From 2023 to 2024, electricity consumption fell by 4.4%, while heating consumption decreased by 5.1%.
  • The lighting is gradually being replaced with LED technology. Around 1,500 LED lights are currently in use.

Waste reduction
  • For decades, no plastic or single-use packaging has been used at the breakfast buffet.
  • Since 2009, residual waste, especially cardboard, has been compacted in a waste press, reducing the number of waste collection trips.
  • 30% of goods are delivered in reusable containers.
  • Used cooking oil is processed into biodiesel.
  • Organic waste is collected separately and recycled.
  • Waste prevention and disposal are part of the internal staff training programme.
  • The specific amount of total waste per overnight stay was reduced from 1.38 litres to 1.28 litres between 2023 and 2024, a decrease of 7.2%.
  • Annual consumption of 15,500 pairs of spa slippers has been reduced to around 5,000 pairs per year, a reduction of two thirds. This corresponds to around 850 kg less plastic waste per year.

Locally-sourced
The Hochschober kitchen sources many products from Carinthia, Styria and the Alpine-Adriatic region.
Local value creation and short distances
  • 40% of the food is sourced from suppliers in the region. Of this, 20% is organically certified.
  • For conversions, new construction and renovation work, Hotel Hochschober works predominantly with companies and tradespeople from the region.
  • Following the conversion and construction of new staff accommodation, all employees living on the Turracher Höhe can reach Hotel Hochschober on foot. Accommodation within walking distance is an important contribution to workplace quality and also helps to avoid car journeys.
