Swimming in the fresh air in pure lake water in summer and in winter. The heated 25 m lake pool in the cold Turracher See makes it possible. The water is a pleasant 30 °C all year. A sophisticated system takes care of warmth and water exchange. It was a sensation when it opened over 20 years ago as the first pool of its kind in the entire world!
Plan your holidays
The first swimmers meet in the lake pool at 7 in the morning. There’s enough space to swim laps in the 25 m pool. In the fresh air and in pure lake water. Depending on the season, the sun is just rising or lights up the mountains. Steam rises over the water in winter and your gaze is captivated by the frozen Turracher See and the snow-covered mountains.
Everything is taken care of at all times at the Hotel Hochschober. Hang up your bathrobe and the towel in the warming cupboard before climbing in. Loungers are available on the wooden platforms at the Turracher See in summer. Pedal and rowing boats, water bikes and SUP boards have their landings stages a brief walk away at the “Marina”.
When it opened, the lake pool was the first of its kind around the world. It’s the original and, to this day, the lake pool at the highest altitude to be open all year round. Peter Leeb, father of Karin Leeb and a passionate swimmer, had the idea. However, the water in the Turracher See is usually too cold for swimming. Thus, Peter Leeb was spent ten years looking for ways to install a heated pool. He finally succeeded with the help of inventive technicians. Hotel Hochschober opened the first heated lake pool in the world in 1995.
How does the lake pool – not a pool per se, but open to the bottom – work? Here’s a bit of physics: warm water floats on cold water. The heater is hidden in floating stainless steel pontoons delimiting the pool to a depth of three metres. The warm lake water therefore stays on top while the cold water forms a natural border. This also makes it possible for the heated-up water volume to change every 10 hours.
Swim in the original! The heated lake pool was the first of its kind worldwide when opening over 20 years ago.
