Delightful winter holidays at the Hochschober
Are you looking for reliable snow for skiing? The Turracher Höhe (1,400 to 2,205m) is among Austria's most snow-sure skiing areas. The skiing season usually starts in November and lasts until early May. Skiers praise the outstanding quality of its slopes and cherish the vast views over Styria and Carinthia.
Lifts
You have a choice of 14 ski lifts
- three 6 seater chair lifts
- a combination lift with 8 seat cabins and 6 seat chairs
Slopes
In total, there are 38 kilometers of slopes in the skiing area: a good mixture of slopes for beginners and proficient skiers, at once varied and manageable.
Skis and skiing equipment
You can buy or hire equipment at the Sporthaus Ski-Sepp shop and the Intersport Brandstätter shop. Josef Huber, the "Ski-Sepp", has established his own ski-service station for guests at the Hochschober Basislager equipment center. Here, he prepares your skis and arranges for hire equipment on request.
Ski passes
If you wish you can pick up your ski pass at the reception desk of your Hotel Hochschober. You also have the option of using the ski pass function on your room key card, which we can activate for you.
Ski and snowboard schools
Several ski and snowboard schools on the Turracher Höhe offer an extensive range of classes for beginners and proficient skiers. Children are welcome at the ski nurseries and children's ski schools. The hotel's dedicated bus service FE-LIX runs daily around the ski courses start times.
Skitouren
If you would like to try a ski tour or off-piste skiing you have several options. You can choose from easy or more demanding touring mountains. The local terrain is gentler than in higher altitude Alpine regions. The snow situation tends to be stable while the risk of avalanches is relatively low.
In any case we recommend you only go off-piste with a local guide. Ski schools will help you find guides and stay safe.

Cross country skiing on the Turracher Höhe in Austria
The Turracher Höhe is an exceptionally idyllic centre for cross country skiing. 20 kilometres of trails run through the stunning winter landscapes. Equipment for your winter holiday is available for hire in the local sports shops.
A small selection of trails
- A very simple trail is the flat trail on the frozen Lake Turracher See on the border of Styria and Carinthia (1.8 kilometres – classic/skating).
- Also easy to ski is the Hochmoor-Schwarzsee moor trail (3.7 kilometres – classic/skating). Its starting point is accessible via the Sonnenbahn cable car.
- One of the medium difficulty trails is that into the Weitental Valley (6.5 kilometres – classic).
- A higher difficulty is the Zirbenwald forest trail (3 kilometres – classic).
